VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — The Virginia Beach school system has become one of the latest to enact policies and regulations that restrict cellphone use during school hours.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that under the regulations, students must keep their cell phones turned off and stored in a personal bag or in an area designated by the teacher “during instructional hours or in work environments. education”.
This includes if a student leaves the classroom and in auditoriums, gymnasiums, locker rooms and more.
Teachers will also not be allowed to allow students to use mobile phones to “occupy teaching time or to occupy students instead of providing instructional activities or as a reward”.
Virginia Beach Education Association president Kathleen Slinde said the organization encourages students and their families to comply with the new rules because it will help reduce distractions in the classroom.
Accommodations will be available for students who require their devices for medical or other reasons that are included in their individualized education program or 504 plan.
