Officials from the Vestal Central School District closed Vestal Hills Primary School, 709 Country Club Road in Vestal, and sent students home early Wednesday as a precautionary measure due to a high carbon monoxide reading in the city. building.

The issue is currently under investigation by district facilities and operations staff.

Meanwhile, Vestal Hills director Therese Mastro informed families that some students are still being transported and other families are keeping their children at home.

Students already in school were sent home unless a parent or guardian was not there to receive them.

Students who could not be sent home were transferred to the African Road Elementary School auditorium until they could be picked up by a parent or guardian.

Teaching staff accompanied the students to the African Road site to supervise them until they could be picked up. District officials planned that teachers would then assemble at the district office to work on lesson preparation.

School assistants have been reallocated to help at other elementary schools while Vestal Hills remains closed.

Authorities do not know at this time whether the Vestal Hills building will be able to reopen on Thursday. They plan to place an announcement later Wednesday and will also notify parents through an alert notification system and via a banner on the school district‘s website.
