He also served on the board and said he had already donated $ 1.7 million to the school before his last donation.

“I loved my time at Roanoke College,” he said in a telephone interview Thursday afternoon. “It helped shape my career and who I am today. “

Continuing, McConnon said in the press release, “I hope my donation and story will help other alumni reflect on how Roanoke College has been able to help and inspire their lives and careers. I felt that at this point in my life, after a rewarding career, I would give back to Roanoke College.

“I ask all alumni to consider making a donation for the future of the College and the new Science Center. It will be rewarding for them, the College, and future students who aspire to greater things.

Maxey said McConnon has been an asset to the college in many ways, not just financially.

“You could see his brilliance in his service to the board all the time. He’s just a magnificent mind and thinker, ”said Maxey. “Since then he has made all kinds of contributions to the college in terms of relationships and leadership. He’s just a great guy.

McConnon majored in biology, with a minor in chemistry. He said he hoped to become a vet, but found out on his first job out of college that he was allergic to most animals, so he had to find another career path.
