IONIA – A new superintendent isn’t the only staff change at Ionia’s public schools this summer.
Ben Gurk was hired as the new district superintendent on June 16. Since then, many more changes have taken place and will continue to take place as the school district is now looking to hire a new high school principal, middle school principal, human resources director and payroll director. .
Jennifer Burns, associate superintendent of teaching services at Ionia Public Schools, who also interviewed for the position of Superintendent of Ionia, has since submitted her resignation as she accepted an administrative position at Grandville Public Schools. His last day of work for Ionia will be July 30.
“I really care about the families and staff of Ionia, so this change is bittersweet,” Burns told The Daily News. “I will miss them all very much.
“I am not a new face in Grandville,” she added. “When I was working as an education consultant at Kent Intermediate School District, I facilitated professional development at GPS. Grandville feels right at home and I am grateful to have been selected to join the GPS team.
Meanwhile, Ionia Middle School Principal Wayne Piercefield, who also interviewed for the position of Superintendent of Ionia, was offered and accepted the newly created position of Assistant Superintendent of Success. student and human resources, according to Gurk, who said the position is dependent on school board approval at the July 19 school board meeting.
“Wayne will take on the role Jennifer Burns holds with slight changes to the job description,” said Gurk.
Piercefield told the Daily News that as a longtime resident of Ionia, he was excited about the new opportunity and the challenge of working for the school district in another capacity.
“My career has given me the opportunity to work alongside many amazing educators and families at every level of the educational process, and I look forward to working side by side with members of our educational community in the expanded role of Associate Superintendent. student success and human resources, ”he said. “Superintendent Gurk and I have always had a strong working relationship with each other and with the rest of our management team, and I am excited about the future of IPS. “
