Hillcrest High School Students Honor Their Classmate

SIMPSONVILLE, SC. (WSPA) – Hillcrest High School honored one of their own during Friday night’s soccer game. Many students, relatives and friends wore blue and black in honor of Elijah Smith, or as his friends called him, EJ.

Smith was gunned down in Tipsy Taco’s parking lot. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. His classmates say he will be missed forever.

“Tonight is about him and it’s senior night too, so we want to represent him,” said classmate April Elston.

His classmates said he always put others before him.

“He didn’t deserve it at all. Elijah would be the last person, he had no issues with anyone, ”classmate Chase Carter said.

EJ is described as kind, amazing and always smiling. His classmates say that in his absence it hurts.

“As a senior class we all feel, because if one of our classmates is hurting, we are hurting too. They are part of us, just as EJ was also part of us, ”said Elston.
“It was, it was hard, really hard. It’s probably one of the toughest things a lot of us have had to go through, ”Carter said.

Chase Carter said he had been playing basketball with EJ since grade 7.

“He was like a brother to me, like when he passed away, it really touched me. It really touched me, ”he said.

Carter said they had honored Smith all week by holding candle light and prayer vigils. In Friday night’s game, they wore t-shirts in his honor and wore his favorite color, blue.

Even if he’s gone, they say his memory will live on.

“You will always be loved Elijah Smith,” Elston said.

The students said on Saturday that there would be a balloon release in honor of Smith. They will also place flowers and letters in its parking lot.

Sagin Willasch was charged with the murder of Smith last Monday. He is being held in Greenville County without bail.
