COPA releases body camera video of police shooting that killed Miguel Vega in Pilsen – CBS Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) – The Civilian Police Accountability Office on Monday released body camera video of a police shooting that left one person dead in Pilsen earlier this month.

Police say two officers were driving down 19th Street at Loomis Street on the evening of Tuesday, September 1, when they came under fire.

Police said they were there on a call for a suspicious person and were patrolling the neighborhood in an unmarked car. Police say officers saw five men standing on the sidewalk and trying to get out of their unmarked car when they were shot at.

One of the officers returned fire and punched and killed 26-year-old Miguel Vega. Vega was shot in the back of the neck and died in hospital.

There is no sound at the start of the body camera clip of the officer who fired the shots, but an officer is seen opening the cruiser’s passenger side door and firing his gun.

COPA also released body camera videos of other officers, audio and written reports.

Police found a weapon at the scene. At the time, police tweeted a photo saying they had recovered Vega’s gun. However, Vega’s family says the gun was discovered more than 40 feet from his body.

The video was released 21 days after filming. Just last week, the Chicago Inspector General’s office accused COPA of not following its own policies by failing to release videos and documents of police use of force incidents in 60 days.
