Charlotte School Superintendent: “Make Masks Optional” | Education

Charlotte County Schools Superintendent Steve Dionisio will recommend making masks optional.

Dionisio sent a year-end message on Saturday morning to congratulate the staff on ending this difficult year. In the email, he also explained how he plans to move forward with the masks.

“As we close this school year, I also want to let you know that at the June 15 school board meeting, I will be recommending that the board make masks optional in the future,” Dionisio wrote. “I would like to thank you once again for all that you have done as a staff to get through this difficult year. “

Schools in Sarasota County had also released a similar optional mask plan.

Sarasota Schools Superintendent Brennan Asplen released a statement on May 28 proposing that without any drastic changes in health guidelines or COVID-19 cases, schools are operating as normally as possible over the next school year. .

“The school district’s plan is to open the 2021-2022 school year face-to-face without distance learning or concurrent teaching methods,” the letter from Asplen read. “Plus, this includes the start of next school year, with face masks being optional for employees, students, parents and visitors.”

The school board will vote on the proposal in three weeks.

Masks have been a divisive topic for some parents since the start of the pandemic. Dionisio took the time on Saturday to briefly address the challenges his staff have faced over the past year while thanking them for their hard work and professionalism.

“First of all, I just want to congratulate all the staff at CCPS. We did it. I know there were many who doubted that we would be successful this school year, but it would only be those who did not understand what was going on. ‘Are a Dedicated Staff Charlotte County Schools are fortunate to have. What you have had to overcome this school year is, quite frankly, like no one else before and I hope you never have to again. As I have said several times, the way you have dealt with all the obstacles that have been thrown at you has been just amazing. “
